What you will learn in this book: Jamaica is a wonderful island in the Caribbean. Known for its wonderful culture and pristine beaches, its heritage is also something to marvel over. Christopher Columbus arrived on the island in 1494 and found Indians here, the Tainos. The Tainos had their own culture, organization and language. However, Columbus and his men overworked the Indians and along with disease (both by Columbus and his men), the Tainos were annihilated. Then the English took over the island from the Spanish and began cultivating sugar on a large scale. This type of cultivation required a large labour force, so the English began importing slaves from West Africa. Hence, the dawn of the African Slave Trade. Slavery was brutal and humiliating. Many died because of the conditions they endured and many resisted. Those who survived, managed to see the Emancipation of Slavery. With Slavery abolished and labourers still needed, the English began importing indentured labourers to do the work. After indentureship, some workers decided to remain in the island. One such group is the Chinese, who make up a large segment of the retail sector on the island. Also in this book you will learn about the beginning of the Cooperative Credit Union in the island, how it was formed and how it differs from a bank. Enjoy
